Your Health Insurance Won't Cover These Common Issues

Senior discussing health insurance with a doctor

Seniors often assume that most of the medical coverage they will need will be taken care of for them by their health insurance plan. However, this is not always the case. There are a number of medications and procedures that health insurance doesn't cost, which can be a major surprise to seniors just trying to stay healthy. Let's look at 6 of the more common things that aren't covered by insurance.

Eye Care

While many seniors, both men and women, deal with eye problems such as cataract and glaucoma, routine examinations and most eyeglasses are not covered by insurance.

LASIK Surgery

LASIK, or laser vision correction surgery, is often recommended for those who have to wear contacts or eyeglasses the majority of the time. Even seniors can undergo for LASIK if they meet certain requirement. However, the procedure is not covered by insurance.

Hearing Exams

Seniors may find themselves suffering from age-related hearing loss as they get older. This is a common problem. In fact, around 1 out of every 3 seniors between 65 and 74 deal with hearing loss. However, hearing exams are not covered by insurance.

Hearing Aids

While hearing aids are a more common need for seniors, the cost of the exam to fit a hearing aid and the device itself is not paid by insurance. Hearing aids can run anywhere between $1,500 and $3,500 per unit—a price tag that many seniors simply can't afford to pay.

Dental care is important for seniors and children alike. Everyone wants a nice smile and healthy gums! Unfortunately (with only a few exceptions) dental care and denture bills are the responsibility of the patient.

Orthopedic Shoes

Many seniors find that they need special (and expensive) orthopedic shoes to correct foot problems. But specialty shoes are not covered, and they can cost hundreds of dollars.

Many of the issues of aging can be solved by providing parents with the support they need to continue to maintain their independence. The resources provided by Caring Senior Service can help. Get in touch with us today!
